Greenbelt, MD—The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been sued by the mother of a teenager who was killed in a Maryland police helicopter accident, after the pilot was given inaccurate weather information by FAA air traffic controllers, reported UPI.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. district court in Greenbelt, Md., by Stephanie D. Younger for the death of crash victim Ashley Younger, 17.

The suit claims that the inaccurate weather information provided by FAA air traffic controllers, caused the death of Ashley Younger as she was being transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries in a car crash on Sept. 27, 2008. The weather condition at the time of the crash was rainy.

The crash also killed the pilot, Stephen H. Bunker, a paramedic and an emergency medical technician.

The National Transportation Safety Board claimed one of the major causes of the helicopter crash was the decision of the pilot to descend rapidly, as well as his misjudgment of the weather conditions before takeoff.

Younger’s complaint contends that the “controllers were inattentive and uncommunicative after the pilot told them he faced worsening weather conditions that prevented his continuing the lift to the hospital.” The lawsuit also asserts that the controllers provided Bunker with outdated weather information, which indicated a higher visibility level during their attempted emergency landing at Andrews.
