Bremerton, WA– A construction worker was seriously injured while working on the replacement of the Manette Bridge on Saturday, March 4, 2011. The construction accident occurred around 8 a.m., when he was hit in the head by an object, as reported by the Seattle Times.
According to Bremerton police, the 38-year-old worker was either on a barge or a small tug beneath the bridge when he was hit in the head. Officials say whatever hit him did not appear to fall down on him from the bridge.
Co-workers put the injured worker in a cage-enclosed stretcher and transported him to a barge closer to the shore in the area of the Boatshed Restaurant. Responding emergency crews from the Bremerton Fire Department used a makeshift gangplank to get out to the barge to retrieve the seriously injured worker.
The Bremerton Fire Department said his injuries appeared to be life-threatening. He was rushed to Harrison Medical Center, where he was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The man sustained obvious head injuries and was not conscious.
The Washington Department of Labor and Industries is expected to investigate the construction accident.
