Concord, CA—Three people were injured when a 10-car BART train derailed Sunday morning, March 13, 2011. The train accident occurred at the Concord BART station at 9:20 a.m., reported KGO-TV.
According to officials, the BART train was on its way to the airport when it derailed at a slow speed. Apparently the train derailed as it was pulling out of the station, and switched to a single-tracking to get around crews who were working on tracks just south of the station.
“This was the first train to start single-tracking around the work and when it was crossing over to go into the single-tracking mode, that’s when the slow-speed derailment happened,” explained BART Chief Spokesman Linton Johnson.
Witnesses reported that the train looked like an accordion as it teetered back and forth on the rails.
The 65 passengers on the train were evacuated, and three people were taken to an area hospital by responding emergency crews. The injuries acquired in the wreck were considered minor.
BART officials say it could be months before they know the official cause of the derailment. Investigations are underway.
