Washita, OK—A forklift accident in Caddo County claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl and critically injured two others on Sunday, March 13, 2011. The forklift accident occurred on a private road about a mile north of Washita at around 1:10 p.m., reported News Ok.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), 22-year-old Gerald Todd Bennett was driving a forklift on the private road when the ground suddenly gave way, causing the vehicle to tumble down a four-foot embankment.
There were five children riding on the forklift at the time of the accident.
Responding emergency crews pronounced Harlie M. Beldin, 5, dead at the scene.
Bennett, Skilar N. Furtek, 7, and Madison L. Beldin, 6, were rushed to OU Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. Furtek and Bennett were listed in critical condition. Beldin is in fair condition.
The two other children, Autumn S. Furtek, 7, and Lance W. Beldin, 2, were uninjured in the accident.
The machinery trapped Bennett and Madison for about 45 minutes until someone was able to free them with a track hoe.
All of the people involved in the accident are Fort Cobb residents.
A full investigation into the accident is underway.
