Spartanburg, S.C. — A train crashed at a park in Spartanburg park on Saturday afternoon, March 19, 2011, killing a 6-year-old boy and injured over a dozen others. The train crash occurred Cleveland Park, when it drove off the tracks and overturned, reported WCBD.
According to officials, the train ride nicknamed “Sparkles” was going around a curve, when it went off the tracks and threw at least 15 children into a rocky creek bed.
“It was like the third time around and it was going really fast and then it just completely flipped over and the wheels just stayed on the track,” 10-year-old old rider Samantha Blackwell said.
The children and two adults, which included the train’s conductor Matt Conrad, were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Two of the injured children were airlifted from the park. A 6-year-old was killed in the accident.
Four of 19 patients treated at Spartanburg Regional still remain at the hospital.
The train ride passed Labor, Licensing and Regulation inspection on Wednesday and was running for the first time since the inspection, when the accident occurred. It has been in operation for 58 years. The train holds 30 people and does not have seat belts.
LLR is investigating the accident. Spartanburg Public Safety is also investigating and has called in the South Carolina Highway Patrol to assist in the reconstruction of the wreck.
