Martin County, KY — The first coal-mining death of 2011 has unfortunately occurred after a miner was killed in a Martin County mine on Friday, March 25, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 8 a.m., at the Czar mine near Bear Water Branch, reported the Lexington-Herald Leader.

Officials have identified the victim as underground miner, Robert L. Cook, 54, of Inez. Responding emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to preliminary accident reports, Cook was fatally injured when he became pinned by the boom on a continuous-mining machine.

The mine in which the accident occurred is operated by Matrix Energy LLC, which stretches across the Martin County-Johnson County line.

The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing is investigating. The cause of the fatal mining accident is unknown at this time.

“This is sad and tragic, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this miner,” Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Len Peters said in a statement. “We must continue our efforts as regulators and companies to ensure a safe working environment for the thousands of men and women who work above and below ground each day to provide this energy resource to the Commonwealth.”
