Hanford, CA — A fighter jet crash outside the Lemoore Naval Air Station on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, killed two Navy officers. The fatal aviation accident occurred at 12:08 p.m., about a half-mile west of the base on private property, reported the Kansas City Star.

According to officials, the pilot and the weapons systems operator aboard a two-set F/A-18F Super Hornet jet during a routine training flight when the accident occurred.

Witnesses reported that they saw the plane try to bank left and pull up when it crashed into a field. Neither occupant ejected from the jet prior to the crash.

The identities of the officers are currently being withheld pending family notification. High-ranking officers in charge of Pacific fleet squadrons were visiting the victims’ families.

The jet was reportedly a part of the Strike Fighter Squadron 122, which trains pilots to fly both the Hornet and Super Hornet jets. The Super Hornet is the Navy’s dual-role strike fighter, which serves as an air-to-air fighter, as well as an air-to-ground attack aircraft.

Investigators with the Naval Safety Center in Norfolk, Va., are investigating the cause of the crash.
