Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a hazard warning over usage of hair smoothing and straightening products in hair salons. OSHA issued the health alert on April 11, which warns hair salon owners and workers about the risks of potentially being exposed to formaldehyde, reported TIME Magazine.
Some hair smoothing and straightening products, including the Brazilian Blowout brand, contains formaldehyde, which helps bind keratin to people’s hair during the straightening process.
The hazard alert was issued after complaints from workers were received and evidence was found by OSHA that confirmed that there was dangerously high levels of formaldehyde in the air of salons using these hair-straightening products — even though the products are often listed as “formaldehyde free,” TIME Magazine reported. Exposure to the chemical has given hair stylists and customers allergic reactions, including nosebleeds and eye irritation.
In other countries and in scientific institutions, formaldehyde has been deemed a human carcinogen. The U.S. federal government has not listed the chemical as a human carcinogen.
OSHA has urged salon owners to only use hair care products that do not contain formaldehyde, methylene glycol, formalin, methylene oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanal, oxomethane, oxymethylene or Chemical Abstract Service Number 50-00-0.
