Pottstown, PA — A PECO supervisor was injured in an underground explosion Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2011 in Montgomery County. The work-related accident occurred underground near Hanover Street and Buttonwood Alley in Pottstown, reported CBS.
According to officials, a PECO supervisor was installing two new transformers underground when an explosion occurred for unknown reasons.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke billow and fire shoot from the manhole following the blast.
Fellow PECO workers managed to pull the supervisor to safety. He was reportedly conscious and alert when responding emergency crews arrived. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital for treatment of his unidentified injuries. His condition and the extent of his injuries were not reported.
PECO officials are investigating the cause of the explosion. It is unknown if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating the workplace accident.
