Boone County, IN — An apparent mechanical failure led to an automobile crash the pinned a woman in her car, who was barely able to keep her head above water while a fence post was impaled through her thigh. The crash occurred State Road 47 and County Road 500 East around 10 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011, reported WLFI.
According to Boone County Sheriff’s officials, 25-year-old Valerie Pearson of Kirklin experienced a mechanical failure within her vehicle, which caused her car to veer off the road, through a fence and into a creek near Elizaville.
Nearby residents rushed to Pearson’s aide to help keep her head above the water. She was reportedly stuck in her car for about an hour and a half, because of a fence post that pierced Pearson’s thigh.
Responding rescue crews had to cut the board to get her out of the submerged vehicle. Pearson was conscious at the time and her injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening, officials reported. She was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.
An investigation into the crash and mechanical failure is underway.
