Holyoke, MA — Preventative infection-control measures have been implemented following an outbreak of scabies at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Visitations are now restricted at the hospital as a result of the outbreak, reported WWLP.

Scabies is a contagious skin infection, which is caused by a mite that burrows under the host’s skin. Intense allergic itching and a pimple-like skin rash usually manifests as a result of an infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

All patients and staff members at the hospital are being given a single-dose oral tablet as a preventative measure. In addition, the whole hospital is being cleaned and all clothing, bedding, towels, pillows and mattresses are being replaced if necessary.

If you or a family member has visited a family member who is in residence at the Soldiers’ Home since March 1, the hospital will provide a prescription for Ivermectin or Elimite cream free of charge.

If you believe you are experiences symptoms of a scabies infection, please contact your personal physician, or Kris Dziok, R.N. at (413) 532-9475, extension 532 1107, or Dr. David Clinton at extension 532 1100.

It is unknown what caused the scabies outbreak.
