Louisville, KY — An explosion and fire at Eckart Aluminum in Rubbertown injured two workers on Monday, May 9, 2011. The blast occurred just after 7 p.m., which sent out a “thud” or concussion that was felt by neighbors of the plant, reported WDRB.
The explosion was reportedly sparked by aluminum dust or powder, which also created a fire that was extinguished by 10 p.m.
Responding emergency crews rushed two workers to University Hospital for treatment of injuries suffered from the concussion of the explosion. Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
The identities of the injured workers have not been released.
Because aluminum dust fires cannot be extinguished using water, firefighters had to use a chemical compound described as a “residual” to put out the blaze.
Investigations into the blast and fire are underway.
