/EINPresswire.com/ A look at England’s chances of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship as they face Switzerland at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, a win will see England confirm their place at top of their qualification group.
England can confirm themselves at the top of their Euro 2012 qualification group by defeating Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday. Currently they top the group on goal difference from Montenegro, but any slip up in this match will put their chances of automatic qualification from the group in serious jeopardy.
Manager, Fabio Capello does not have his strongest squad available with major absentees including Steven Gerard, Wayne Rooney and Jermaine Defoe. However, those available, led by recently re-instated captain, John Terry, should still be good enough to beat Switzerland at Wembley and the bookmakers make the Three Lions overwhelming 4/11 favourites to secure the three points.
England won the reverse fixture last September 3-1, with goals from Rooney, Adam Johnson and Darren Bent. The latter of which is likely to lead the attack on Saturday with Rooney and Defoe missing and the Villa striker is 7/2 to score the first goal in the game. Other players England will be looking towards for goals include Frank Lampard who is a 5/1 to open the scoring and Theo Walcott who can be backed at 7/1 to score first.
Switzerland started their European Championship qualifying campaign very badly losing to both England and Montenegro, before grabbing their first points with an emphatic 4-1 win over Wales. They followed that up with a 0-0 draw away to Bulgaria but still sit six points behind England and Montenegro and anything less than a win on Saturday would all but end their hopes of reaching next summer’s tournament and they are 8/1 to take all three points away from Wembley.
Recent history between the two teams does not bode well for the Swiss who have lost the last three against England and they have never won at Wembley. The favoured score line amongst the odds compilers is a 2-0 England win which is a 5/1 chance with Bet365, as is a 1-0 win. A more comfortable 3-0 win fro Capello’s side can be backed at 15/2 whilst 4-0 is bigger still at 14/1.
As it stands, England are 1/10 to top Group C with four games remaining, including Montenegro away in the final game on October 7th but both Capello and England fans will be hoping that a place in the finals is confirmed by then with a win over Switzerland and maximum points from the games against Bulgaria and Wales in September. In the latest Euro 2012 Odds, England can be backed at 9/1 to win the competition in Poland and Ukraine in twelve months time with reigning European and World Champions, Spain, the early favourites at 10/3.
