In Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, Ivy Sit is trying to match Ivy League alumni with exclusive employment opportunities. In the middle of the nation’s harshest recession since the Great Depression, Brown University alumna, Jenny Moniz, found herself unemployed. Unfortunately, she was not alone. Many graduates from the nation’s top colleges were also unemployed or underemployed, including those students who had trained for careers in education. “As early as 2006,” Moniz explains, “I knew of fellow classmates who were unable to find teaching jobs. The problem only became worse over time.”
Moniz, who has a background in wealth management and estate planning, thought she could use her professional experience to help parents and graduates connect with each other. “In wealth management,” Moniz said, “you have to assess your clients’ situations and educate them about financial instruments that may help them achieve their growth objectives. I thought I could apply the same techniques to the childcare business, and help my peers in the process.” As a result, Moniz founded Ivy Sit, a service designed to connect parents with Ivy League-educated childcare providers.
People may think anyone with any Ivy League degree will be eligible to join Ivy Sit’s provider network, but Moniz stresses that all providers must have previous childcare experience and that most studied child development in college. “The ultimate goal is to deliver exceptional childcare,” Moniz asserted. “Many of our providers aspired to become teachers. Ivy Sit is enabling them to realize their dream of making a difference in a child’s life. They’re just doing it in a more intimate environment now.”
