West Palm Beach, FL — The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene of a capsized vessel off the coast of Riviera Beach and rescued 11 people. One person was killed in the boat accident, which occurred Tuesday morning, June 14, 2011, reported NBC Miami.

According to officials, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Knight Island spotted a 24-foot boat without navigational lights about 24 miles east of Delray Beach.

While the boat was stopped two hours later, about 123 miles east of Riviera Beach, several people began to come out of the lower cabin as the boat began to capsize.

The Coast Guard launched a four-hour search and rescue effort, as the boat continued to drift as far north as Jensen Beach.

One person was recovered by a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s dive team from underneath the capsized boat. That person did not survive.

Eleven others were rescued, with one being rushed to an area hospital for “medical concerns.”

The 10 other victims are being questioned by the Coast Guard and are claiming Jamaican nationality.

The Coast Guard and its partner agencies are investigating the circumstances surrounding this apparent migrant-smuggling voyage and its tragic consequences,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
