North Berwick, ME — A tractor-trailer and an Amtrak train collided in Maine, killing the driver of the trash-hauler and injuring the engineer and some of the 112 passengers aboard the train. The fatal train accident occurred at 11:05 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011, in North Berwick, south of Portland, reported USA Today.
According to police, the tractor-trailer drove into the path of the Amtrak train, which caused a fire in the locomotive of the Downeaster and at least one passenger car. The rail cars burned for more than an hour after the crash.
The Associated Press reported that the engineer of the train got off the locomotive and separated the burning engine from the passenger cars to help keep the flames from spreading.
The railroad crossing safety lights were operational and the gates were lowered when the tractor-trailer plowed through the crossing.
It is unknown exactly how many train passengers were injured as a result of the crash, but the injuries were reportedly not life-threatening.
The truck driver was killed in the collision. His identity is being withheld.
It is unknown why he drove through the railroad crossing at this time. Investigations are underway.
