Pittsburgh, PA — A three-vehicle crash, caused by a man who rode his motorized wheelchair into downtown traffic landed the handicapped man right back where he came from—Mercy Hospital. The automobile accident occurred Tuesday, July 12, 2011, on Bigelow Boulevard, reported WTAE Pittsburgh.

According to police officials, the man—who is in his 60s or 70s—left Mercy Hospital and was using a downtown ramp to get onto Bigelow Boulevard when the multiple-vehicle accident occurred.

Other vehicles coming the other way were reportedly already down the hill when they noticed the man in the motorized wheelchair. Police said the first and second vehicles were able to stop, but a third vehicle hit the second car, which then crashed into the first car.

It was not reported if any of the drivers or passengers in the vehicles were injured as a result of the wreck.

The man, whose both legs were amputated, was later found at Frank Curto Park and told officers that he didn’t know where he was going. Police believe he may suffer from dementia.

The man was taken back to Mercy Hospital. It is unknown if he was released from the hospital or he left without permission.

Investigations are underway.
