Carrollton, TX — Rescue crews were called to a construction site behind Good Elementary School in Carrollton to rescue a construction worker who fell down a 55-foot-deep hole, which was only 30-inches wide. The construction accident occurred Wednesday afternoon, July 13, 2011, reported KDAF.

According police officers, rescue crews from Carrollton and Coppell Fire Departments were called to the construction site after a 19-year-old man fell down the hole.

Because there was concern that the victim was not getting enough air, the Coppell Fire Department used a system to pump air into the hole, which was made out of dirt and hardened clay.

The captain from the Carrollton technical rescue was lowered in the hole on a rope system and harness to give to the victim. The victim was then brought to the surface where he was loaded into an ambulance to meet up with a CareFlight helicopter, which airlifted him to Parkland Hospital for medical treatment.

Police reported that the hole in which the man fell in had just been dug. Half of the hole was barricaded while the other half was exposed. It is unknown how he fell into the hole.

Investigations are underway. Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene and conduct its own investigation into the construction accident.
