Bath, NY — A blown tire is being cited as a possible cause of a fatal bus crash in western New York Sunday afternoon, July 18, 2011, which killed two people and injured 35 others. The fatal tour bus crash occurred on Interstate 390 in Steuben County, about 55 miles southeast of Rochester at 4:15 p.m., reported Boston.com.
According to police, the tour bus was traveling from Washington, D.C. to Niagara Falls, when the driver lost control of the bus, causing the bus to swerve into a grassy bank and crash into a wooden median.
A preliminary police report cites a tire blowout as a factor that may have caused the bus crash.
Responding emergency crews airlifted three people via helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, while a fourth victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Eight others were taken to Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville for treatment. The remaining victims were taken to area hospitals for medial treatment of injuries they sustained in the bus crash.
The tour bus involved in the crash reportedly is owned by Bedore Tours of North Tonawanda near Buffalo.
Investigations into the deadly bus crash are underway.
