Solano County Jury Awards Crash Victims $29M for Fatal Hwy 12 Head-On Crash

07/20/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Personal Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

San Francisco, CA — The victims of a 2006 head-on crash near Fairfield have been awarded $29 million by a Solano County jury. Although the jury mostly blamed Nicola Bucci for the deadly crash that killed two children, they also placed blame on the California Department of Transportation, reported the Sacramento Bee.

The fatal crash occurred on Highway 12 in November 2006, when Bucci’s SUV crossed the westbound lane to pass two vehicles in a no-passing zone and slammed head-on into a Toyota at a crest of a hill, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

Two children in the vehicle, 12-year-old Demari Hutchinson and 7-year-old Immanuel Collison, both of Fairfield, were killed in the crash. Jordan, who is Immanuel’s brother, was paralyzed from the waist down. Their mother, Regina Jackson, was in the hospital for over two months following the wreck with multiple fractures.

Bucci claimed to police that he must have fallen asleep, causing the deadly crash. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for second-degree murder. Bucci was also convicted of manslaughter in a 1994 crash that killed two people, after falling asleep at the wheel.

Jurors also found the California Department at fault for the fatal crash by failing to make improvements to the road, like installing a median to the two-lane highway when the crash took place.
