Toddler’s Finger Partially Cut Off on Ride at Lexington Bluegrass Fair

07/25/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Personal Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Lexington, KY — Part of a toddler’s pinky finger was severed while in a fun house-like attraction at the Lexington Lions Club Bluegrass Fair Saturday night, July 23, 2011. Fair officials are calling the incident “strictly an accident,” which occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the “Fun Zone” attraction, reported Kentucky.com.

According to Lexington Lions Club Bluegrass Fair officials, the 3-year-old child lost part of his pinky finger while inside the “Fun Zone” attraction, which is like an obstacle course.

“The part he hurt himself on was the beginning where you have to balance and spin on a disk-like thing,” fair spokesman Michael Kaplan said. “He just lost his balance. Everything on Fun Zone is balance-oriented.”

The “Fun Zone” was shut down within minutes of the accident occurring and the state Department of Agriculture, which oversees ride safety at fairs, was notified.

Inspections early Sunday revealed that no mechanical failures occurred and the ride was operating normally. The ride was re-opened on Sunday, but the motorized or spinning parts were not operational.

The rides at the fair are reportedly operated by Belle City Amusements of Deltona, Fla.

Fair officials stated that there is no age requirement for the “Fun Zone,” which is geared for ages 3 and older. It is unknown if the child was accompanied by an adult, although it is not required.
