MTA Bus Crashes into Uniondale McDonalds in Long Island Drunk Driving Crash

Uniondale, NY — A drunk driver caused a three-vehicle crash that sent a MTA Long Island bus to collide into the side of a McDonald’s restaurant. The drunk driving crash occurred on the Hempstead Turnpike near the corner of Uniondale Avenue at 9:21 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2011, reported the Long Island Press.

According to police, 42-year-old Richard Santiago of Hempstead, was driving a Ford Econoline eastbound on the Hempstead Turnpike when he slammed into a Mercury, a Mazda and the bus.

The impact of the collision catapulted the bus into the side wall of a McDonald’s Restaurant. No one was injured inside of the fast food location.

The driver of the bus, a 51-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of facial and knee injuries. There were no passengers aboard the bus at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Mercury, a 27-year-old man, was also hospitalized with unknown injuries.

Santiago sustained a head injury and was also hospitalized. Police also arrested Santiago and charged him with driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
