Work-Related Accident on an Offshore Texas Oil Platform Kills 1

08/18/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Personal Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Port Arthur, TX — A work-related accident left a man dead aboard an oil and gas production platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The fatal work-related accident occurred on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, aboard an Energy Research Technology production platform on High Island Block A557, about 75 miles offshore Texas, reports WOAI.

According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE), a crane was loading a large piece of equipment onto a work boat from the platform when a boom hoist cable apparently broke, causing the crane to collapse.

The collapsing crane set off a chain-reaction, causing the crane’s harness to hit and fatally injure an employee.

The identity of the fatally wounded worker is currently being withheld.

The BOEMRE is investigating the fatal work-related accident.

The director of BOEMRE, Michael R. Bromwich said: “This was a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased employee, as well as his colleagues and friends. This incident provides the most dramatic possible reminder of what is at stake as we work with industry to ensure the highest safety standards on offshore facilities and do everything possible to minimize the risk of such accidents.”
