Lake Success, NY (WiredPRNews.com) Robert Abrams, a founding member of and counsel to, Abrams Fensterman, Fensterman, Eisman, Greenberg, Formato & Einiger, LLP (Abrams Fensterman), is set to launch a national campaign to encourage Americans to prepare for the elder years. In preparing for the launch, Mr. Abrams is establishing strategic relationships that include several legal and health related organizations, private companies and municipalities. Abrams intends to leverage his knowledge and experience in the elder care arena and his network of elder care professionals to create a “Nation of Planners”.
According to Abrams, “Given that by the year 2030, one out of every five Americans will be at least 65 years old, with a life expectancy of approximately 80 years of age, now is the time for Americans to become pragmatic planners rather than geriatric gamblers.” Abrams points out that, based on his own professional experience, and that of his colleagues, “Aging Americans must prepare in advance for the future. In so doing, they will avoid legal and personal missteps that could lead to expensive and time-consuming litigation and heartache for themselves and the people they love.”
In his new book, “Be a Planner, Not a Gambler: What You Need to Know and Do to Prepare for the Elder Years”, which will be officially released next month, Abrams sites nine critical issues that Americans, 50 years of age and older, must begin to deal with as early on as possible. Under a banner he calls The Informed Planner’s Principles; Abrams encourages his readers to embrace the following notions.
Longevity: With increased longevity comes the need for a pragmatic, timely and individualized elder plan.
Mental Incapacity: You must carefully consider, prepare and execute Advanced Directives given the possibility that you may subsequently experience a period of mental incapacity.
Health: The quality of your health directly impacts the quality of your life – don’t take your health for granted.
How to pay for health care: A catastrophic health event can potentially devastate you financially and probably will if you do not have a plan to pay for healthcare in your elder years.
Financial Consultation: Financial instability and uncertainty can be minimized by prudent planning that is based on a realistic assessment of your unique circumstances.
Families: There is no greater safety net than a loving family.
Safety: You may not be able to control how other people behave, but you can control how you do.
Government: Maximize the rights and benefits you are entitled to receive from government programs.
Mortality: A well thought out estate plan provides protection for your loved ones and ensures that your testamentary wishes are honored.
“Finding a lawyer who is knowledgeable and experienced in matters relating to aging and elder care is paramount to educating yourself about what you should be doing now to better protect yourself and your family in this rapidly changing world,” says Abrams. “Securing and protecting your interests and wishes for the future, demands that an experienced attorney helps you navigate the options and opportunities that are available to you,” notes Abrams.
“Elder care, health care and the law around aging issues has always been a core competency of Abrams Fensterman,” says Howard Fensterman, the firm’s Managing Partner. “As our nation’s senior population continues to expand, Abrams Fensterman is committed to devoting significant resources to this part of our practice.
