Elkhart, IA — After being trapped for over three hours, rescue crews pulled a trapped man from a grain bin on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. The workplace accident occurred at 9:39 a.m. at the Heartland Co-op at 4300 94th Ave., east of Ankey, reported KCCI.
Des Moines rescue crews were called to help assist Ankeny crews with the rescue efforts to help pull a man who was buried up to his chest in grain.
Steve Kaufman, 56, of Ankey, was performing routine maintenance when the accident occurred.
Firefighters were lowered into the grain bin to give Kaufman an oxygen mask and to monitor his condition while trapped inside the bin. Kaufman was tethered with two firefighters inside the bin as they unloaded the grain from a 30-inch opening at the base of the bin.
At around 1 p.m. Kaufman was pulled out of the bin, about 3.5 hours after initially becoming trapped.
Kaufman was airlifted by a Mercy One air ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. Two other employees and an Ankey firefighter were also hospitalized as a precaution after being exposed to the grain dust.
Kaufman was listed in fair condition.
Investigations into the workplace accident are underway. It was not reported if the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would report to the scene to conduct its own investigation.
