NY Work-Related Accident: Verizon Worker Fatally Electrocuted in Brooklyn

09/15/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Brooklyn, NY — A Verizon worker has died after he was electrocuted while working on power lines Wednesday, September 14, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 11:31 a.m., on New Lots Avenue between Christopher Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard in Brooklyn, reported the Wall Street Journal.

According to officials, Douglas Lalima, 37, was working on power lines that were connected to an electrical pole from inside of a cherry picker when he was electrocuted.

“He was trying to run the cable. Somehow he caught on the power cable,” said witness William Velazquez to WSJ. Velazquez estimated that Lalima remained on the line for “close to a minute.”

Witnesses reported hearing a pop as Lalima’s body caught on fire.

Responding firefighters rushed to the scene and pronounced Lalima dead at the scene.

“He came in contact with power lines — how that happened, I don’t know,” said Verizon spokesman John Bonomo as WSJ reported.

Investigations into the fatal work-related accident and how it occurred are underway by Verizon and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
