Lawsuit: Medical Mistakes by 3 Hospitals Led to Death of 7-year-old Boy

09/26/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Chicago, IL — A lawsuit filed against three hospitals, two physicians and an ambulance company was filed after a 7-year-old boy died while suffering an asthma attack and was taken to three different hospitals within an 11-hour time frame. The lawsuit was filed in the Cook County Circuit Court, reported ABC 7 News-WLS.

Aaron Pointer suffered an asthma attack at his home on September 13. He was transported to two different hospitals that informed them that the hospital did not have the proper equipment to treat the boy’s asthma attack. The lawsuit asserts that the boy’s death was a result of being taken from hospital to hospital within 11 hours.

The Pointer family says Aaron spent a few hours at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields and several hours at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, in which both hospitals said he needed facilities better equipped to handle his condition. Aaron died during a 45-minute ambulance transfer to St. Joseph Medical Center.

“The real mystery is, not just why weren’t they able to handle it, but — assuming for the moment that they couldn’t handle it for whatever reason — instead of deciding to transport him to a hospital that has optimal care for pediatrics suffering respiratory conditions, pediatric ICU units, the very first transfer should have been to a pediatric ICU unit,” as ABC 7 News-WLS reported.

The Pointers says they were not given a choice about the transfers that day and were never told that Aaron was going to be transported so far.

The lawsuit is seeking damages for Aaron’s death.
