Massachusetts Repairman Passes Out, Falls 14 Feet Underground

10/01/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Boston, MA — A repairman was rescued after passing out and falling 14 feet down an underground manhole Thursday, September 29, 2011. The work-related accident occurred outside of a West Bridgewater car repair shop, while he was fixing a broken valve, reported The Boston Channel.

According to officials, Williamson Electric Motor Service employee, Gus Futyma, 51, was repairing the broken valve in a septic pump chamber when he suddenly fainted and fell down the manhole.

A co-worker, who happened to be Futyma’s brother-in law Jay, revealed that Futyma was in the well for less than 10 minutes when he began to complain that he couldn’t breathe.

Responding emergency crews rushed to the scene and extracted Futyma from the underground manhole, and rushed him to a Brockton hospital for medical treatment. He reportedly spent the night in the intensive care, but his current condition is unknown at this time.

Although Fuytma was wearing a safety harness that was attached to a winch, rescue teams had difficultly removing him from the manhole and had to cut the pipe to get him out.

It is unknown what caused Fuytma to pass out.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the work-related accident.
