Goshen, IN — An explosion at an Indiana fertilizer plant injured four workers, who were welding a tank on Monday, October 3, 2011. The industrial accident took place at T & T Fertilizer, just southwest of Goshen, at around 11:35 a.m., reported the Washington Post.
According to officials, the explosion also spilled 2,000 gallons of ammonia into the plant, which was contained by the plant’s dike system.
The blast left four T & T and Southwest Welding employees injured. One victim, a 24-year-old man, was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, while three others—ages 16, 56 and 61—were taken to Elkhart General Hospital after they complained of having trouble breathing. Their conditions have not yet been released.
Surrounding homes were not evacuated because the ammonia had reportedly been dissipated into the air.
Investigations into the explosion are underway. Officials with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating.
