EPA: Chemical in Camp Lejeune Water is a Human Carcinogen

10/06/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Jacksonville, NC — A chemical present in Camp Lejeune’s drinking water for decades has now been classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPS) as a human carcinogen, reported the News-Record.

The hazardous chemical—trichloroethylene (TCE)—was discovered in the military training base’s drinking water, before the wells were closed two decades ago.

It is estimated that as many as 1 million people have been exposed to TCE over the years. The Marine Corps has yet to decide if they will contact former residents about the recent classification of the chemical found in the water supply.

The Jacksonville Daily News reported that the water became contaminated when dry cleaning chemicals seeped in the Marine Corps base water. TCE was used as a degreaser by dry cleaners.

It is unknown at this time whether the military will provide medical care for those who have become sick as a result of tainted water.
