Dixon, CA — A school bus transporting special-education students collided with a tractor-trailer Wednesday, October 12, 2011, injuring six people. The school bus crash occurred around 7:25 a.m. at the intersection of Hackman and Runge Roads, near East Pedrick Road in Dixon, reported KCRA.

According to reports, the 18-wheeler and the school bus were traveling east on Hackman Road and was approaching Runge Road, when the bus decided to pass the slower moving semi-truck. As the bus was trying to pass the semi, the driver of the semi started to make a left turn on Runge. The bus driver tried to re-enter the eastbound lane, but the bus hit the left rear tire of the semi, which caused the bus to overturn onto its side.

A witness stated that the 18-wheeler had its lights on as it was about to make the left turn, when the bus decided to go around the semi on a double yellow.

The medium-sized bus was transporting five people, between the ages of 16 and 22, at the time of the wreck.

The bus driver, Michael Snyder, and the driver of the 18-wheeler began to help the students inside the bus. Many of them were trapped sideways with the seatbelt across them.

The students reportedly sustained minor injuries in the crash. One student suffered a broken arm that will require surgery. The driver of the bus sustained a large gash on his head.

The bus driver was taken to North Bay Medical Center in Fairfield for treatment of his injuries.

Snyder is reportedly employed by Michael’s Transportation, which is a private bus company that was hired by the Dixon Unified School District to transport the special-education students.

Investigations into the bus crash are underway.
