Trenton, OH — A herbicide sprayed on the lawn of a Butler County school sickened nearly 50 students Tuesday, October 11, 2011, which sent at least five students to the hospital, reported WLWT.com
According to Butler County EMA officials, a herbicide called Momentum was used to treat the school’s lawn about two hours before the students began to feel ill. If the herbicide is inhaled, it can become irritating.
“We’re thinking that chemical and the smell of it went into the classrooms. The chemical they’re dealing with is an irritant by inhalation,” Butler County EMA director Jeff Galloway said to WLWT.
Five students were taken to area hospitals for medical evaluation at their parent’s request, while 42 others were taken to an adjacent high school to be examined.
Many students were taken to the hospital or to a doctor by their parents, so the exact number of how many students sought treatment at a hospital is unknown.
Air monitoring and Hazmat units from Middleton and West Chester responded to the scene where they found no hazardous chemical agents.
