Bakersfield, CA — The death toll has risen for the fatal workplace accident that occurred at Community Recycling and Resource Co., as the injured 22-year-old worker has been taken off life support. The composting worker was left brain dead following the Wednesday, October 12, 2011, accident in Lamont, reported Bakersfield.com.

According to reports, 22-year-old Heladio Ramirez, of Arvin, was taken off life support and died at 11:04 a.m. Friday, in Kern Medical Center’s intensive care unit.

Ramierz’ brother, 16-year-old Armando Rameriz, also died days earlier as a result of the workplace accident. Armando died inside an 8-foot-deep drainage tunnel at the recycling center when he was overcome by hydrogen sulfide, which is a dangerous byproduct of the composting process.

The duo were reportedly cleaning out the tunnel when they were overcome by the fumes. A third worker, who remained at the surface, was also hospitalized after inhaling the deadly gas. He was treated and released.

The U.S. Department of Labor and the Labor Commissioner has since launched an investigation into the fatal workplace accident, after it became apparent that Armando had falsified papers regarding his age. Armando’s identification listed him as being 30-years-old, when in fact he was 16.

Investigations are underway.
