Fire at Calif. Home Care Facility for the Disabled Killed 5, Injured 5

11/07/2011 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Monterey County, CA — Five people were killed Saturday, November 5, 2011, when a fire erupted at a California home care facility for the disabled. The fire was reported at about 11:45 p.m. in Marina at Mt. Carmel Adult Residential Facility, reported ABC News.

According to officials, five bodies were recovered from the single family home following the blaze.

Four of the bodies of the deceased were recovered not long after the fire, while a fifth was found Sunday morning. The identities of the deceased are being withheld at this time.

Three Marina police officers also suffered smoke inhalation when they tried to save the occupants of the home. The injured police officers were taken to an area hospital, and were treated and released.

Two others, who remain unidentified, were also injured in the blaze. They have since been treated and released from the hospital.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are aiding in the investigation into what caused the deadly fire. An “accelerant detection canine” was also at the scene to help determine if the fire was intentionally set.

The home care facility is licensed with the state, according to California Department of Social Services.

Investigations into the fatal fire are underway.
