Omaha, NE — Lawmakers are moving a bill through Congress to legalize the use of pre-recorded, or otherwise known as “robo-calls” to consumer cellphones. The bill aims to clarify outdated language that prohibits robo-calls for things like school closings and low banking balances, reported KETV.
The bill, H.R. 3035, is being considered by the House technology and communications committee, which has people on both sides of the fence.
Many argue that under the current language, it is illegal for even schools to automatically call people. While others assert that the reason they got rid of their landlines was because of the constant and intrusive robo-calls.
The National Association of Consumer Advocates worries that “Harassing robo-calls on consumer cellphones will become the new norm,” reported KETV.
So far Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry has received 25 letters of support from Mid-American Energy, and several universities and bankers.
KETV reported, “We want to make sure the language is very explicit, very clear. You will not get unwanted calls to your cellphone, only the ones you are asking for,” Terry said.
