Kids in a new groove provides innovative solution for foster youth via private music lessons; Blues Traveler to perform at AT&T sponsored concert for gala

/, Texas— Kids in a New Groove – a nonprofit that presents an innovative solution to the foster care crisis by providing youth in care with private music lessons – today announces details of their 2011 Music For The Soul Gala featuring Blues Traveler on Nov. 18, 2011, At One World Theatre in Austin, Tx. The Grammy Award-winning group will give fans a once-in-a-lifetime experience including dinner, cocktails, and a music-themed live auction. AT&T* is sponsoring the event, along with NBC carrier KXAN. The event is important, since on average, less than two percent of foster youth will graduate from college and up to 50 percent will end up homeless within two years of emancipation.

Kids in a New Groove is also working with AT&T on educating attendees on the dangers of texting and driving as part of the company’s “It Can Wait” campaign. According to a study by Pew Internet, teens text five times more text messages a day than a typical adult, on average. Texting also takes one’s eyes off the road for an average of 5 seconds, which, at 55 mph, that’s driving the length of a football field completely blind.(1)

Guests will be encouraged to stop by the AT&T booth to sign the anti-texting-while-driving pledge and watch the AT&T’s “The Last Text” preview – an eye-opening video featuring real stories of lives that were altered, or even ended, because of texting behind the wheel. To ensure guests keep the risks of texting while driving top-of-mind, they will also receive car visors featuring a “Don’t Text and Drive” reminder message when they leave the event.

“We are grateful for AT&T and KXAN’s support in providing the children in Texas with the benefits of music education, and are proud to address one of the most dangerous issues facing teens today – texting while driving – alongside AT&T,” said Karyn Scott, Executive Director and founder of Kids in a New Groove.

“AT&T shares the goal of Kids in a New Groove to keep Texas’ foster children in school through graduation. Music, children and education are all intrinsically linked and Kids in a New Groove is providing an enlightened way to keep kids interested and in school,” said Tracy King, AT&T vice president for public affairs for the western region.

AT&T’s focus on the event isn’t just on the dangers of texting and driving, however. They have always supported the arts and are excited to be involved with Kids in a New Groove, who offers a hopeful path for youth in foster care. All of their most recent high school graduates went on to college this fall, demonstrating that they are making a difference with programs that help foster youth improve grades, behavior, and overall life skills. The event will allow them to sustain their programs throughout the state, with the goal of eventually spreading nationwide. Lessons become a lifeline as teachers move with foster youth between placements, building trust and helping them develop lasting relationships. Kids in a New Groove is a 501c3 non-profit that offers private music mentorship to Texas foster youth, with the goal of helping kids age out of the system with tools for success. The program has a proven track record of helping youth improve grades, behavior, and overall life skills, while teachers involved in the program all have advanced degrees in music. Students take different types of lessons based on the child’s chosen area at no cost to the child or foster family, including voice, piano, percussion, guitar, and music production, to name a few. Students also perform in an annual recital and have the opportunity to make live recordings in a professional recording studio. Many students have also performed in statewide recitals and have been featured on KUT radio. The program currently provides lessons only to children in Texas, but will be expanding to other areas in the near future. Many children are referred through Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers or Child Protective Services caseworkers.
