Outside-the-box thinking is what the people at theatrical drape rental supplier Rent What? Inc. do best. Already known for providing a wide assortment of velour, satin and muslin drops of every color, shape and variety, Rent What? also brings innovative and unexpected use of materials in its drapery rental collections, including mirrors, metal mesh, light strings, polyester mirror film and camouflage netting.
One such drop is the Modular Reflective Mirrors from the company’s Swanky Drapery Collection. Best described as “jewelry for the stage,” the backdrop is a dazzling linear mobile of 420 mirrored plates randomly suspended on invisible threads, creating an effect that’s a cross between a hip kinetic sculpture and a Las Vegas “Rat Pack” showroom. As mirrored plates rotate freely on suspended strands, they play with the light in an organic, dazzling dance of reflection and color. Recent celebs performing in front of the Modular Reflective Mirror backdrop are the GoGos and John Legend.
Another unusual non-textile drop is the Metal Mesh Drape from the Industrial Textures Collection. The backdrop’s look is angular, abrasive, dimensional and crinkly. The mesh works well with either front light or back light, displaying edgy shapes and shadows and a contemporary “mixed media” quality, allowing the stage designer a tremendous performed before the Rent What? Metal Mesh backdrop.
“Our creative hats are always on,” said Rent What? partner Megan Duckett. “We’re constantly borrowing concepts from outside sources such as the construction industry, store displays, even cheesy holiday props, where we can repurpose a material to generate an entirely new look on stage.”
An example, Ms. Duckett explains, is the Starlight LED drape that was inspired by the popular Christmas “icicles” light strings. “When you think about Christmas lights, they’re a nightmare to untangle. What we did was envelop them in voile so they can’t tangle and hang them like drapes. This way, they’re easy to use, remove and re-use.” The look is a sparkling shower of stars that is both magical and dramatic. With sizes up to 12′ and even 24′ high, the LED Starlight drop has graced the stages of such celebrity performers as The Cranberries and David Archuleta.
Adapting a concept from another outside source, Rent What? employed huge sheets of polyester film, a material commonly used in signage, wrapping paper and the aerospace industry, cut 2″ slits lengthwise and created a glittery “rain” curtain that gives a Las Vegas splash to any performance. The GoGos and the cast of Glee have wowed audiences in front of the rental polyester film drop from Rent What?.
When one thinks of camouflage, the obvious connections are military and hunting. But in the hands of the Rent What? designers, camouflage netting in non-traditional colors looks magnificent when either front or back lit. “We’ve uncovered the beauty in something that would never ordinarily be considered for the stage and made it compelling,” said Ms. Duckett. Agreeing with that sentiment are Perfect Circle and the Goo Goo Dolls who have both draped their stages with the innovative netting material.
Added Ms. Duckett, “Our job is to give set and lighting designers a huge canvas of materials for their creative expressions. Going outside the expected opens up a vast new range of options for these professionals. It’s not just about fabrics and textiles, but ideas!”
