Orlando, FL — A bus company, who owns the bus where a Florida A&M band member died after being hazed last November, is being sued by the victim’s parents. The lawsuit accused Fabulous Coach Lines of negligent actions that led to the death of their son, USA Today reported.

The parents of Robert Champion Jr., Robert Champion Sr. and Pam, accuse the bus company of negligence, because band members were allowed to get back on the bus to conduct hazing rituals, after returning to an Orlando hotel following the Florida Class football game against Bethune-Cookman University.

Robert Champion Jr., 26, is believed to have been a target for several reasons, due to his homosexuality, his candidacy for chief drum major, and his opposition to the band’s hazing culture. An autopsy showed that his death was a homicide.

The Champions are still unsure why Robert was even on the bus, because it was well known that hazing rituals were organized on the bus by a group of band members known as “Bus C.” The band members, which mostly consisted of percussionists, would drop their gear off in their hotel rooms and then return to the bus to haze those who wanted to be indoctrinated into the organization, USA Today revealed.

But, Fabulous Coach Lines maintains that their staff did everything to get help once they were aware of a problem.

Orange County detectives and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are still investigating Champion’s death.
