Missoula, MT — An industrial accident at the old Smurfit Stone Mill has critically injured a Missoula area man, after a piece of metal fell on his chest. The work-related accident occurred Tuesday night, January 3, 2011, while the man was scraping a tank at the facility, reports NBC Montana.
Doug Dove was reportedly scrapping a tank at Smurfit when a 350-pound piece of metal fell onto his chest. Some reports indicated that Dive may have been using a cutting torch when the accident occurred.
Responding emergency crews rushed Dove to St. Patrick Hospital for treatment of broken ribs, and is reportedly in critical condition.
Dove is employed by Industrial Technologies Corp., who was contracted by the site’s owners, Green Investment Group Inc.
Green Investment, Industrial Technologies president Dave Murray said in a prepared statement: “An incident occurred Tuesday, January 3, 2012 that resulted in serious injury to veteran employee and friend Douglas Dove. Our thoughts and prayers are with Doug and his family during this uncertain time. A full investigation of the incident is already underway,” NBC Montana reported.
Investigations into the industrial accident are underway. It is unknown if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA) will be investigating as well.
