Ridgeville, SC — At least two corrections officers were injured during a disturbance at a state prison near Ridgeville Wednesday, January 18, 2012, causing officials to use tear gas to restore order at the high security Leiber Correctional Institution, reported TheState.com.
There were about 230 inmates in the dorm where the disturbance began, in which inmates overpowered two guards and took their keys and a radio.
The prison was immediately put on lock down, and about 200 officers from the Department of Corrections and 12 surrounding agencies responded.
It is unknown at this time how many inmates were involved in the disturbance.
Two correctional officers were taken to an area hospital, where they were treated and released. One officer required stitches, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
Dorchester County medical officials say three people were transported for medical attention.
There were no immediate reports of any inmates being injured.
