San Diego, CA — A midair collision killed seven Marines when two attack helicopters crashed over a remote part of Imperial County. The deadly helicopter accident occurred around 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2012, during a routine training mission called Scorpion Fire, which took place about 65 miles from Yuma in the Chocolate Mountains, reported the Los Angeles Times.
According to reports, an AH-1W Super Cobra and a UH-IY Super Huey were training, in part for preparations for deployment, when the accident occurred a few miles from the Yuma Training Range complex.
It is unknown at this time what caused the two helicopters to collide midair.
Six of the seven fatally injured Marines were from Camp Pendleton, and the other was from a Yuma Marine base. The aircrafts were from Camp Pendleton.
The identities of the victims and the name of the squadrons are being withheld at this time, pending family notification.
Officials say the helicopter crash investigations could take months to complete.
