Ector County, TX — Three people were burned in a flash fire from an out-of-use pipeline they were working on. The work-related accident occurred around 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 29, 2011, south of Highway 385 South and FM1787, reported OAOA.com.

According to the Ector County sheriff’s office, three contractors for Plains All-American Pipeline sustained burn injuries while trying to remove a valve off of a pipeline when a flash fire occurred.

John Delaney, 41, of Big Spring, suffered burns to 55 percent of his body, including his arms, legs and back of his torso. Responding emergency crews airlifted him to University Medical Center in Lubbock for treatment.

Fidencio Ortega, 32, of Dallas, was also burned on his left arm and neck. Ortega was treated and released from Medical Center Hospital by Thursday.

A third worker, 22-year-old John Delaney of Big Spring, sustained burns to both his arms. He is still receiving treatment at MCH.

The crew was reportedly working on a small crude-oil gathering station that was decommissioned two years ago.

The cause of the flash fire is unknown at this time. Investigations are underway.
