Alpharetta, GA — The former Alpharetta High School student body president has filed a federal lawsuit against Fulton County schools, after he was removed from his position allegedly because of his stance concerning the selection process of prom kings and queens, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Reuben Lack, 18, asserts that the school district violated his First Amendment right.

He filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court, which is seeking an injunction reinstating him as the student body president.

Lack claims that he wanted to the selection of prom kings and queens to be more inclusive of gay students. As a result, he claims faculty advisers removed him from his position not long after delivering his proposal.

But, the school district’s lawyer maintains that Lack’s removal from office had nothing to do with his proposal, which was tabled by his peers on the student council, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

The lawsuit says that Lack was informed of his demotion on Feb. 8, because of his position for “pushing personal projects” and advocating policy changes.

The lawsuit named the principal, two faculty advisers and the school district as the defendants.

The district’s attorney asserts that Lack was removed from office because “the student was “essentially a poor leader”… “He behaved in manner not becoming of student body president including but not limited to rescheduling meetings with little notice, directly going against the instructions of the faculty advisers.”
