Illinois Grandmother Sues McDonald’s for 2nd Degree Burns on Granddaughter

03/26/2012 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Chicago, IL — A Chicago grandmother has filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s Corp., after her granddaughter suffered second-degree burns on her chest from spilled hot coffee. The lawsuit was filed on Thursday, March 22, 2012, in the Cook County Circuit Court, BND.com reported.

Mona Abdelal of Norridge visited a Harwood Heights McDonald’s in January with her two grandchildren, when she asked her 4-year-old granddaughter to throw away her empty coffee cup. The child apparently misunderstood the directions, and instead brought the cup to the counter for a refill.

The employee instructed the girl to come back in a few minutes when a new pot of coffee was done brewing. The child came back, but the employee allegedly did not secure the lid, allowing the hot contents to spill onto her chest.

The hot coffee left the girl with second-degree burns and permanent scarring. Abdelal also reportedly sustained first-degree burns on her finger as a result of trying to help her granddaughter.

The lawsuit also contends that the employee did not place the coffee in a cardboard holder or wait for the coffee to cool down. In addition, the suit asserts that McDonald’s violated its policy of not serving coffee to minors, and failed to properly warn the child of the dangers of handling hot coffee.
