Michigan Man Fights Movie Theater’s Pricy Concession with Class Action Lawsuit

03/06/2012 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley

Livonia, MI — One moviegoer is standing up and fighting for what all movie patrons feel is a blatant rip-off: The theater concession! Joshua Thompson of Livonia, Mich., filed a class action lawsuit against his local AMC Theater over the overpricing of their snacks.

The Detroit Free press reported that Thompson used to bring his own snacks to the movie theater, until a sign was posted banning the activity.

The lawsuit asserts that the movie theater’s prices are three times what the items are being sold for at local stores. For example, Thompson paid $8 for a Coke and box of Goobers chocolate-covered peanuts at the theater in December, reported MSNBC.

It is believed that the lawsuit will be thrown out, because since movie theaters are regulated, they are exempt from Michigan Consumer Protection Act.

MSNBC reported, “A 2009 Stanford research study says that high snack prices at theaters can actually be a good thing, because they keep ticket prices lower, as theater owners know they’ll make it back from us at the concession counter.”
