Olympia, WA — Governor Christine Gregiore has signed a bill that will alert the public after an officer is injured, or killed in the line of duty. The “Blue Alert Bill,” also known as HB 1820, was passed unanimously in the house on Feb. 29, reports Q13Fox.com.
The bill was passed just six days after Washington State Patrol trooper Tony Radulescu was shot in the line of duty.
The “Blue Alert” will operate like the Amber Alert for missing children. Radio, TV and freeway billboard will provide information to the public, once an officer is injured or killed in Washington and an active search has been deployed.
The new alert system is going to cost about $100,000, but bill sponsors say the price tag will be “well worth it.”
Other states like Ohio and South Carolina have passed similar alert systems, according to BlueAlert.US.
