/EINPresswire.com/Ballarat Regional Tourism announced that Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields festival attracted more than 6,000 tourists
In 1995, a renowned Italian organist, composer, and teacher by the name of Sergio de Pieri visited Ballarat and became fascinated by the number of wonderful unmodified nineteenth century pipe organs scattered throughout the Central Highlands Goldfields area of Victoria. He immediately decided that Ballarat would be a perfect place for a festival.
Since then, the city has hosted what would later be known as the “Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields,” a festival of fine music held annually. This year’s event, which was recently concluded last January 22, proved to be another great success, showcasing the region’s fascination with fine music. The city’s most prominent historic venues came alive with music as they hosted twenty-three recitals for the duration of the event. Sir Donald George Bradman’s granddaughter Greta Bradman, a soprano singer, headlined the wildly successful opening weekend of the festival. She was accompanied by renowned organist and composer Dr Calvin Bowman.
Though the festival is over, lovers of music will still have another reason to visit the city. The University of Ballarat Pipe Band hosted the 2012 Australian Pipe Band Championships on April 6-8 at the Eureka Stadium. This event draws thousands of participants and spectators during the Easter holiday weekend. Spectators of this event will enjoy gourmet food and wine sourced from the region while being treated to the amazing aural sensation of a pipe band in full flight.
Festivals such as these have helped to rank Ballarat as the third most popular destination in Victoria. The Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields festival alone attracted more than 6,000 tourists, and the Australian Pipe Band Championships is expected to put up respectable numbers as well.
