New York – A judge has granted class action status to a case related to New York stop and frisk policies. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin made the ruling upon finding the city’s response to a lawsuit claiming the policies discriminated against blacks and Hispanics “disturbing.”

Scheindlin is quoted by the AP as writing in her ruling, “First, suspicionless stops should never occur” and the police department’s “cavalier attitude towards the prospect of a ‘widespread practice of suspicionless stops’ displays a deeply troubling apathy towards New Yorkers’ most fundamental constitutional rights.”

The lawsuit against the New York police department was filed in 2008.
