Lawrence-Based Howell Custom Building Group To Lead Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity Home Builders Blitz in June May 22, 2012, Lawrence, Massachusetts – This month, six local building companies, led by Steve and Susan Howell of Howell Custom Building Group, of Boxford, are reviewing blueprints, sharpening their tools, and getting ready to make the American dream of homeownership a reality for two Lawrence, Massachusetts families.
In partnership with Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity, the team of builders from competing firms will join forces on June 4 to build a new duplex on the recently cleared lot on Market Street. One week later, two families will be able to call the spot “home.”
The Lawrence project is just part of a national Habitat for Humanity Builders Blitz campaign to build and/or renovate more than 200 houses in the same week.
Led by local Blitz Chairman, Steve Howell of Lawrence-based Howell Custom Building Group, the Merrimack Valley team also includes builders from Meadowview Construction (Georgetown); Cote & Foster Construction (Methuen); Premier Builders (Georgetown); JSR Adaptive Energy Solutions (Hamilton); and Correct Temp, Inc (Methuen).
Each firm is donating its time, energy and skills to build these two homes with projected out of pocket costs of approximately $230,000 and 15,000 hours of donated labor. Two-thirds of the cost will be covered by donations of materials from the builders and the support of many local businesses sponsoring the effort.
The project highlights the dedication and generosity of many others in the Greater Lawrence community: a local family donated the home sites to Merrimack Valley Habitat, a young local architect donated his service to design the homes; and dozens of local businesses have donated supplies, labor, expertise, and meals to support this ambitious undertaking.
Steve Thomas, Emmy Award-winning television personality and former host of the home improvement shows This Old House and Renovation Nation, will join the Merrimack Valley building team. As spokesperson for the Habitat for Humanity Builders Blitz, he will also visit Habitat affiliates in Memphis, Tenn.; Flint, Mich.; McKinney, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; and Raleigh, N.C to help raise awareness on how building professionals can take an active role in addressing the affordable housing needs of their communities.
“We are giving hope and a home to two local families and improving a Lawrence neighborhood. The positive energy around this project for all those involved has been infectious. And Steve Thomas’ presence on the job will just be the icing on the cake,” said Steve Howell.
About Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity
Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization dedicated to building homes and building hope in the Merrimack Valley. Founded in 1985, they have delivered on their mission for 75 families to date. They are the independent local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the largest non-profit homebuilder in the world. Working in partnership with families in need, volunteers, and donors, they build simple, affordable, homes that are then sold to the families at cost with a no-interest mortgage. This partnership makes it possible for families who could not otherwise afford a home realize the dream of homeownership. Every week, volunteers help the American Dream come alive in our community by volunteering their time and donating supplies. To help fund their work, Merrimack Valley Habitat opened the first ReStore in the region in 2011. Promoting the benefit of reuse, reduce and recycle, they sell donated appliances, furniture, building materials and home furnishings at greatly reduced prices.
