Santa Ana, CA – Disneyland has been ordered to consider permitting the use of Segways by park visitors who are disabled. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a California appeals court directed the theme park to study Segway use in a ruling stemming from the case of Tina Baughman who alleges the park refused the allowance of a Segway for her despite her having limb girdle muscular dystrophy and relying on the two-wheel electric vehicle to get around in her condition.
Chief Judge Alex Kozinski is quoted by the AP as writing for the court, “We have every confidence that the organization that, half a century ago, brought us the Carousel of Progress and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln can lead the way in using new technology to make its parks more welcoming to disabled guests.”
Kozinski is further quoted as writing, “As new devices become available, public accommodations must consider using or adapting them to help disabled guests have an experience more akin to that of non-disabled.”
